On
cold wet evening, in the warm kitchen of Mrs. Duivenvoorden sat the
combined forces of Duivenvoorden and Koomen, idly chatting and sipping
hot cups of coffee.
As
the air became heavy with smoke and the hours slipped into the early
morning, it dawned on Barry Duivenvoorden that the Koomens and the
Duivenvoordens could combine to form a complete soccer team.
It
was decided to give it a try, and the DUKO UNITED team came into being.
The DUKO’s challenged the rest of Monbulk to a friendly game.
The word got out. Soon
all the old time soccer fans were instilled with their former zeal and
fervour for soccer. The
challenge was met. DUKO
UNITED won the match 3-1.
More
important than this actual match however was the fact that during this
time, interest in soccer was re kindled, AND THE SEEDS OF MONBULK SOCCER
CLUB WERE LAID.
During
May, 1969, Len Duivenvoorden and Jo Best got together and organized the
first meeting of people interested in soccer.
This meeting was held in the home of Mr. Best.
The
Monbulk Soccer Club was born. At
this meeting it was decided that the Monbulk Soccer Club be called
“The Lyrebirds,” and that it become Federated with the Victorian
Soccer Federation as soon as possible.
From
“The Lyrebirds” 1971.
